MK@Westwood “A Whiff of Fresh Air, A Gift for Generations”

Part 2

Adopting new plants (Green Wave project) & planting new seeds!

Plants provide us with fresh air! Our kindergarten partnered NParks and participated in the Green wave project which is a global biodiversity education project that heightens children’s awareness on biodiversity and the importance of protecting our natural environment.

As part of the project, we adopted the Red Tree Shrubs (Leea rubra). Our children took care of the plants by watering the potted plants daily, ensuring that they grow healthily! They also listened to a story on “Bobby and the lost seed” and completed some activities in the book to get a better understanding on the environment (the different insects, birds and plants) around us and the role that they can play! By starting young, they will spread the message and love of planting and its importance to their parents!

  • Children watching the “Bobby and the lost seed” video and doing the activities in the activity booklet

Part 3

Harvesting our own vegetables!

Besides this, we also embarked on a planting project – growing our very own vegetables for sustainability! The children planted and cared for the Kai Lan vegetables until they are ready to be harvested. They were asked whom they would like to show their appreciation to and we decided on the non-teaching staff who have been working tirelessly behind the scenes to keep our school safe and clean in the midst of the pandemic!

After almost two months, it is finally time to harvest our vegetables! Armed with scissors, the children cut off the stems gingerly with their fingers and wrapped up the vegetables into a bouquet to present to our security guards, cleaners and operation support officers (OSOs)! Check out their delighted faces when they were presented the vegetable bouquets!
