Phase 1 -Showing our gratitude to the Nurses serving at Ng Teng Fong Hospital
How did we go about?As our preschool was located in the western part of the island, our natural choice was to pick the nearest hospital as the beneficiary.
The children and their teachers went through several rounds of discussion before they came to unanimous conclusion to choose the sunflower as our symbol.
The sunflower’s colour symbolizes warmth, positivity, strength, happiness and friendship.
We are doing our bit for mother nature. Nothing beats the warm and fuzzy feeling inside you when you have done something for planet. Teachers introduced upcycling materials, such as vitagen bottles, PET bottle caps and can drink tags to the children. These little craftmen took small steps from exploring the material to making the final products-stalks of beautiful sunflowers resting in petite vases. Crafting these materials and giving them a new life in the form of a completely unique “One-of-kind” item brought great joy to these little craftmen.
The children were excited in their accomplishment in preparing the care packs, including healthy muesli bars and tissue packs. We invited our children, and their parents to pen personalised messages in the ‘Thank you’ cards for the medical staff.
Due to pandemic restrictions the children were not able to present the care packs to the hospital staff in person. The teacher and the principal delivered the gifts to the hospital on their behalf. After the handing over of the even, teachers showed the photographs and read out to the children the response from the hospital in appreciation of their work.
Phase 2- Bring cheers to the Foreign Immigrant Workers at their newly builded domitories
When the news of construction for building new dormitories for 3,000 foreign workers in Singapore and launching in August. We collaborated with a volunteer group who was collecting kids’ drawings to decorate the dormitories.
We saw this as an opportunity for our children to express their gratitude and bring cheers to these foreign workers, who have been in isolation since the circuit breaker period.
Much of the news and discussion had been shared with the children about their community living conditions and the reflection of how these workers had played their roles these workers played in contributing to our country.
We roped in our students, and their families during the mid-term school holidays to be involved in the compaign to bring hope and cheers to uplift these workers who have been separated from their families and stayed in the dormitories. What better communication than visual art which is the earliest for of communication used by human?
A picture that is worth a thousand words. Message, slogan, feelings can be conveyed in pictures. Moreover, visual images do not pose any language or cultural barriers. It was a wonderful avenue for children to dialogue with their parents how he or she would like to express their thoughts in illuminations.
