Walk with the Elderly

There is an elderlycare near our centre. Every tuesday, the kinder 1 and kinder 2 class visit them and assist them as they walk and change rooms. The children enters the place with a smile on their face as they greet them “good morning akong/ama, aunties/uncles” with a handshake. After the greetings, children will hold hands with the elderly as they assist them in walking. Some of the elderly are sitting on a wheelchair, children assist in pushing the wheelchair or staying beside them as they move.

For the first few months the children have noticed how slow the elderly as they move and they need to adjust their phase to be at the same phase with them. They also noticed that the elderly sometimes doesn’t respond to them as they ask them questions such as “how are you akong/ama?”.

As months passed children adjust the same walking phase as the elderly has and they patiently wait for their answer when they ask them or as they communicate with them. Children even change partners to be able to communicate with different elderly but for some they stick to the elderly they are used to assist.
