Start Small Dream Big program is a great opportunity for the children to experience interesting and engaging activities highlighting to them their strong capability in helping others and the environment.We collaborated the SSDB project with our centre’s annual project approach program. The children initiated the idea that they wanted to focus in helping the environment and make it clean, so they formulated the question, ‘How do we recycle things?
The teacher shared the ‘Karung Guni Boy’ story to the K1 children, the story is about the boy named ‘Ming’ who loves to invent things using the old items that he collects. It was a great start to inspire the children about recycling things!
The children made a recycled paper using old newspapers and roughpapers. They tore the different kinds of paper, soaked them in the water for a week, strained the pulp using the tray, and lastly, they let it dry under the sun. They were able to observe the texture of the paper after it dried.
Banana peel fertilizer making was conducted to let the children be aware of the idea that we can also recycle fruit peels. They soaked the banana peel inside a jar withwater. After few days, it was ready for use as plant fertilizer.
The K1 children collaborated with the N2 class by designing the water bottle pots which they will use in planting.
Using different recycling materials like plastic bags, paper bag, andunused fabrics, the children designed on their own and created beautiful shorts, skirt, dress, and raincoat.
The children turned the magazine into jewelleries by cutting it into triangular strips, and roll and paste until it turns into a bead.
The children created a solar oven by covering the box with aluminium foil.They tested the oven and put food in it. After soaking the solar oven under the sun, they noticed some changes in the egg.
From the project, the children were exposed and they learned about the simple ways of recycling various objects that people usually dispose. This program’s aim is to encourage children to be ‘Little Earth Protectors with Big Hearts’.
