The "I Love Otters" Carnival 2017 by Kinderland  Preschool, Marine Parade

In 2016, Kinderland collaborated with Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS) for the “I Love Pangolins” Carnival to promote awareness of the Pangolins, one of the last few native mammals in Singapore and to encourage our children to care for them.

This year, Kinderland continued this meaningful partnership with WRS to educate and further engage our children on the importance of conserving Singapore’s native wildlife through a hands-on workshop, conducted at WRS. The children learnt about the otters, their natural habitat and the challenges that the otters faced living in an urban environment.

On 21 July 2017, the parents were invited to our “I love Otters” Carnival at Marine Parade Preschool. The event was also part of ECDA’s “Start Small Dream Big” initiative and parents were informed that the nett proceeds from the event would go to the WRS Conservation Fund. The fund would be used for the purpose of conserving Singapore’s endangered native wildlife, in addition to capacity building, education and awareness programmes on key species and conservation issues in the Southeast Asian regions.

Through the weeks of preparation for the event, the children used various materials like rulers, erasers and old cardboard boxes to make their games for the Carnival, modelling clay to make to make their own ‘handprints’ to be sold, They also used tie-dye paints (various colours) and canvas bags to make their own tie-dyed bags and pouches.

The children also learnt the importance of caring for the animals and the environment around them. In addition, the K2 children were given the opportunity to experience first-hand selling their self-made craftworks to both parents and children during the event itself.

Our learning journey to the zoo inspired us to do our part for the Otters.
