SSDB 2023 E-Bridge Fernvale Link: 17th July, Visual Impairment Awareness Day!

On 17th July 2023, the school organized a “Visual Impairment Awareness Day” to honour people who are visually impaired, as well as raise awareness towards emotions of isolation that this group of people frequently experience. This event aimed to help others understand and empathize with the struggles of the visually impaired.

We collaborated with parents to allow their child to put on sunglasses, or colored eyewear, throughout the day in school. Children experienced what it felt like to have their vision restricted and understood the lives of others who are visually impaired. The teachers and children spent the day discussing about how they felt when their vision was restricted, and how they could support a visually impaired classmate through routines and activities.

To show their support and participation on that day, the parents put on sunglasses or other coloured eyeglasses during check-ins.

The children were engaged in a variety of activities, such as a color-blindness test, helping each other while participating in outdoor games, and going around the environment with different coloured lenses. The children’s eye-hand coordination was challenged during meal times, as they had to scoop and transfer the food from the bowl to their mouth.

To further expand their learning experiences, the children were tasked to partake in a Take Home Kit and work with their parents to create tools/toys and message cards for the visually impaired. These items would be donated to Singapore Association of the Visually Handicapped.
