Read for FUNds Family Carnival

In collaboration with National Library Board and with the help of the parent volunteers, MY World @ Tiong Bahru View organised “Read for FUNds” Family Carnival to instil in children a love for reading and to raise funds for MYMCA charity and community programmes.

In preparation for the event, the children created different art and craft based on stories to be sold and auctioned on the day of the Carnival. Many parents also donated pre-loved clothes, toys, books and others materials for the flea market stalls. The parent volunteers who were in charge of the flea market stalls spent two Saturdays in school making beautiful and creative stall posters.

Based on a Chinese story 《柠檬不是红色的》, the PG and N1 teachers concocted a tasty and refreshing Ice Lemon Tea to beat the heat on that day. Bookmarks, musical intruments and rainbow chimes were handmade by the children after reading the story, ‘Mix It Up’ and ‘Knick Knack Paddy Whack,’ and《不可思议的彩虹》.

Cookies were one of the best-selling food items in the Carnival by the N2 class. Want a bite? Let’s read the story ‘Mr. Cookie Baker” and savour the cookies together! Not to forget the gorgeous hand-painted pouches and chinese fans based on the book ‘Eco Gifts’ and ‘The Badger and the Magic Fan.’

Our little K1 authors made their very own recipe book and expressed their creativity in making their mysterious masks after reading the story ‘Super Simple Masks.’ In addition, the K1 sold cupcakes based on the story 《好饿的毛毛虫》.

The K2 class sold everyone’s favourite - “p…p…popcorn” from the story ‘My ‘P’ Sound’ and vibrant canvas art based on the story ‘The Museum’.

The game stalls were prepared and supervised by a group of parent volunteers with their children. They spent two weeks making the game materials at home. The children enjoyed playing at the four game stations and received prizes upon completion.

  • ‘Rainbow Fishing’ based on the story ‘Rainbow Fish Finds His Way’

  • ‘Spider’s Web’ from the story ‘The Very Busy Spider”

  • ‘Feed the Caterpillar’ based on the story 《好饿的毛毛虫》

  • ‘Pirate Treasure Hunt’ from the story ‘Winnie’s Pirate Adventure’

Another group of parent volunteers and their children were in charge of the flea market stalls. The children learnt about how they can reuse pre-loved materials and experienced the process of buying and selling with coupons. The older children learned more about the value of money and spending within their means.

Besides the flea market, food and game stalls, we had our very own photo booth with lots of character costumes and face painting. These were huge hits with the children and families!

Of course, the children’s lively performances were the highlight of the event as everyone waited excitedly for it. The N2 performed “Goldilocks’ and ‘The Three Little Pigs’ based on the story ‘The Three Little Pigs.’ The K1 performed ‘The Lion Sleeps Tonight’ based on the story ‘Disney’s The Lion King.’ The K2 performed 《幸福的脸》based on the story 《爸爸和我一起玩》.

To end the wonderful and successful event, the principal expressed appreciation to the staff and parent volunteers who had invested much time and effort in the event preparation. All the parent volunteers received a Certificate of Appreciation. It was truly a fun and meaningful event!
