Making pencil holders ✏️ as part of the National Day Celebration 🇸🇬

As National Day approaches, a fun way to engage the K1 children in this festival is by doing some art and craft work together! This time round, the children unleashed their creative juices and suggested multiple interesting activities that revolved around the topic of up-cycling in which they have learnt about previously. Eventually, all of them have came to an agreement to make pencil holders by combining the remaining toilet rolls with pieces of cardboards.

And with that, based on the children’s idea, we got cracking right away by first facilitating them in cutting one end of the toilet rolls and securing both items together with scotch tape before inviting them to draw and colour the Singapore flag onto their toilet rolls as well as to decorate them using crepe papers independently. After the completion of the pencil holders, the children appeared to have taken great pride and excitement which could be observed as they attempted to test them out by fitting in the school’s stationeries.

Through this activity, the children learnt to better perceive wastes as resources as they reused materials in creative ways, giving them a second life and function. Additionally, through this initiative, they also learnt that commemoration can be showcased through meaningful actions as well, which in this case, it will be to love our environment ❤️ by reducing waste in Singapore ♻️.
