Eshkol Valley@PPCC 2023 SSDB Learning Story #6 - Excuse Me, You Are A Marine Biologist?

In line with our SSDB launching project on ocean conservation and ocean life, we were very delighted when Ms Sam Shu Qin, a marine biologist from the Tropical Marine Science Institute, National University of Singapore, decided to pay a visit to our school to share with our little ones about the types of coral reefs found in Singapore, the threats they face and the ways we can help protect them. It was an eye-opening session for our children and teachers as we looked at her interesting coral reef slides and listened to the marine biologist’s sharing. She even brought some dead corals for us to touch and examine at close range, cool huh!

Following the marine biologist’s visit, our children were thrilled by another group of visitors - the S.E.A Aquarium educators who came to lead a sharing session on the current threats faced by the marine animals. They also facilitated a “see-think-wonder” brainstorming session at the end of their sharing to encourage our little ones to further understand the topic on marine conservation through a draw and tell activity.

After learning so much about the importance of conserving the marine environment from Ms Sam and the lovely S.E.A Aquarium education team, we were very determined to do our part to be eco superheroes in saving our magnificent oceans and ocean life. In fact, we were so inspired that we decided to do a “Save the Ocean” family carnival to bring the conservation message across to our families and friends. Do watch out for our next update of it!
