Caring For Our Elderly

We kickstarted our journey with the K1s and K2s. In the beginning, it felt so overwhelming as there were so many areas to cover and the children had a lot of ideas. As our journey began and as we continued walking to learn about the different communities such as the disabled, elderly, foreign workers and many more, the children decided to narrow it down to caring for the elderly as they grew empathy within them for the eldery as they discovered the various reasons for the eldery to be at the Old Folk’s Home. The children came up with amazing suggestions that we created and paved the way for our kids to enable them to show their care, love and empathy towards the elderly by dramatizing, inviting a representative from St John’s Old Folk’s Home that we collaborated with as well as encouraging our parents to be part of the journey as well as warmly welcomed them to join our Launch Party and contribute along the way in our wonderful stroll in the world of Start Small Dream Big. It was amazing and wonderful to see our children being so active and excited to help the elderly and being so enthusiastic towards this group of community by suggesting to play games, do drawing together, do a performance for them and even shower them with words of endearments such as ‘I loce you’, ‘You are so beautiful’, ‘Have a nice day’ etc.

The children were guided along this journey to be more open and engaging towards the elderly people. As young children being slightly tactful towards new people, we created an opportunity for them to showcase their authenticity towards the elderly people when they get to see them. Hence, they were informed to dramatize whereby they worked in pairs where one of them would pretend to be the eldery and the other being them. The children did great by taking along things that they would need to go to Old Folk’s home to bond with the elderly such as storybooks, colour pencils and drawing paper as well as toys to play with them. It was such a lovely sight to see the children dramatizing and learning how to take care of the elderly people using their own initiative.

To end our wonderful journey, we encouraged both our children and parents to carry on with the journey with their young ones by visiting the Old Folk’s Home at their convenience and to continue contributing within their means. It is important for a good cause to go a long run and not end it with a fullstop.

Here are some interesting photos of our little ones at work:
