Activity 8: Different Bins for Different Things

During the first SSDB launch party, the children were given the exciting opportunity to create their own recycling bins. With their newfound bins, the children diligently engaged in recycling but now their bins are overflowing! It was time to recycle the contents of their bins to the larger recycling bins located in our school, affectionately known as the Bloobin.

To instill a deeper understanding of recycling, the children were introduced to the Bloobin and its function. They were taught what items can be recycled and the ones that cannot. The children eagerly participated in the recycling process by placing some of the recyclable items into the Bloobin themselves. This hands-on experience further enhanced their learning.

To expand their understanding of having different bins for different things, the children were brought to the primary school’s canteen. Here, they were introduced to compost bins and learned about how food wastage is managed. The primary school children were encouraged to pour their unfinished food into the compost bins. These food scraps were then transported to a compost machine. The primary school children utilized the resulting compost soil to cultivate edible mushrooms.
