“I Love Otters” Carnival Kinderland Preschool, Choa Chu Kang

The project on “I Love Otters” Carnival, which is a collaboration with Wildlife Reserves Singapore (WRS), was introduced to the children to help raise awareness on Singapore’s endangered native wildlife. We wanted the children to be aware of the plight of these animals and how they can help save the endangered animals. Our centre then decided to embark on a carnival project as through this project, we can help to raise the funds that could go into saving the otters. They also attended an interactive workshop conducted at the Singapore Zoo earlier on. At the workshop, they talked about the ways to save the otter’s habitat and one of them is through recycling items found in their everyday lives. After they have attended the workshop, the children were inspired to work on this project as they wanted to do their part to save the endangered wildlife.

Prior to the carnival, the children brainstormed on the various ways to help raise the funds for this cause. The children came up with ideas such as selling handmade crafts made out of recyclable materials such loo rolls, plastic bottles, empty boxes and more. Using those materials, the children made crafts such as paper weights, baskets, stationary holders and piggy banks. We also set up fun-filled otter related game booths and food stalls. Through this carnival, we hope to raise enough funds to support the cause.

On the day of the carnival which was held on 21st July 2017, the children were very eager to be little entrepreneurs by helping to sell their “products” to their parents and peers. We garnered the support of the parents, together with the children’s extended family members to help make the fundraising event a success. The project was a wonderful platform to help the children gain confidence in themselves, and it was a memorable experience for everyone involved.
